Why are all the comment sections headed "Report Violation"? But thanks still for wonderful SKY & TELESCOPE it has been a valued companion for nesrly sixty years. I could learn more about these gadgets, but the poetry and wonder of the night sky continues to enthrall me more-just as it did when I had a 3.5" newtonian telescope rather than the 25" I now have, and we lived without being plugged in. Dobsonian telescopes, which are reflectors with a simple mount, provide lots of aperture at relatively low cost. The reflected sunlight you see coming from Mercury took a brief 6½ minutes to reach Earth, where that from Saturn took just under 1½ hours to get here. Sky & Telescope readers share their astronomy pictures featuring lunar craters, solar eclipses, ghostly nebulae, sparkling star clusters, and much more. As a rule of thumb, your telescope should have at least 2.8 inches (70 mm) aperture and preferably more. Of the five planets youre seeing, right now Mercury is closest (about 0.8 a.u.), followed by Venus (1.3), Mars (1.4), Jupiter (4.7) and Saturn (10.6). Computers seem strange to me I don't even know what "pdf" means. The aperture's diameter (D) will be expressed either in millimeters or, less commonly, in inches (1 inch equals 25.4 mm). Whatever happened to them? That short column was so easy to use, and now I rarely see a good occultation except by accident. I liked being able to find the issue date easily-why is it almost hidden? Also, I greatly valued the old "OCCULTATION PREDICTIONS". I liked the cover lettering more that the square letter form presently used. While all the color is nice, there are some things about the old format and content I prefer. I have been an S & T subscriber since I was in seventh grade (1951).
